Oakland city has begun the construction of a tiny home village for its homeless. The project will be undertaken on a city-owned land at Lake Merritt. The city has partnered with Housing Consortium of the East Bay, to build the community that will be home to 65 people when complete. Dubbed Pallet Shelter, the new community will be located at East 12th Street. On top of providing decent housing, communal services will be available to residents in order to help them transition to stable housing. According to Oakland City Council President Nikki Fortunato Bas, the project will be a significant upgrade to the living conditions of the lucky beneficiaries. “Through this project, we will demonstrate that compassionate, trauma-informed, tiny home communities can effectively create safer and healthier communities, and also help residents successfully transition to stable housing and health,” she said.,
